Ottawa Jail Hostel is so much more than just a place to sleep for the night. It’s a historic jail turned hostel (which is already pretty iconic), but it’s also the perfect home base for discovering everything happening in Ottawa this spring and summer beyond legislation!
So whether you’re here for music, arts, culture, laughs or just to vibe with other travelers, there’s always something going on nearby. You can trek alone, link up with your newfound hostel buddies, or join the Ottawa Jail Hostel’s many excursions to get the real taste of Ottawa when the party lights go up. And the best part? You can come back at the end of the night (or day, if you’re fancy!) to sleep inside one of the coolest historic buildings in the city.
Here are a few of our favourite festivals to check out this season:
Canadian Tulip Festival – Commissioner’s Park (Dow’s Lake)
May 8–18, 2026
Starting off our list strong with a FREE festival! Founded in 1953, after Princess Juliana of the Netherlands gifted Ottawa 100,000 tulip bulbs for granting her family refuge during WWII, the festival remains an annual celebration of the friendship between Canada and the Netherlands. Immerse yourself amongst over 300,000 tulips and experience tulip mania like a 17th century Dutch citizen (minus the economic downfall and societal collapse!), listen to local town criers compete for the best “oyez” in the land, or just flood your feed with the color and beauty of Canadian summer.
Ottawa Fringe Festival – Arts Court & Rideau Center
June 18–28, 2026
All the world is a stage! Live theatre is an ancient tradition, and Ottawa fringe takes that idiom and lets the entire city’s freak flag fly! The shows include everything from old men at a metal concert, Harry Potter fan fiction, and of course, trained magicians. Come with a group! Ask out your hostel crush! However you show up, prepare to be surprised! The theater is one of the last places where you 100% cannot look at your phone, so you have no choice but to be entertained. Consider Ottawa Fringe your digital detox massage as well as your gateway to the immersive creative energy of Ottawa’s people. The Bard will be proud.
Ottawa Jazz Festival – Confederation Park
June 19–28, 2026
Founded in 1980 to celebrate the vibrant local jazz scene, the Ottawa Jazz Festival has expanded over 45 years into a celebration of jazz, soul, hip-hop and global grooves. Jazz not your thing? Scared a middle-aged jazzhead is going to corner you and want to talk about “late 60’s hard bop before it went mainstream”? Ah! Fear not. Students of hip hop, crate diggers, jazz aficionados or total newbies will find music that astounds on many levels. Who else can get Wyclef Jean and Jeff f**king Goldblum in the same lineup?! Finish up your stay and head over to Saintlo Montreal for the Montreal Jazz Fest and keep the party going all summer long.
Festival Parasol – Hotel Casino du Lac-Lemay
July 16–26, 2026
Canadian’s approach summer with a holy reverence (surviving winter here inspires collective elation each year), and Festival Parasol is no exception. Festival Parasol is Gatineau’s connection to Montreal’s Piknic Électronik. Picture a giant beach party with insane club djs, carnival rides, a beer festival, and sublime summer vibes–just across the bridge from Ottawa. So brush up on your French, grab your hostel crew and dance away your troubles for a few days over pulsating electronic beats. Ottawa Jail Hostel’s experience coordinator, Ariel, will be hosting organized outings for anyone curious, so don’t be shy about signing up at the front desk when you arrive. Grab a day pass or a full festival passport to experience it all.
Ottawa Blues Fest – LeBreton Flats Park
July 9-19, 2026
Like Ottawa Jazz Fest, the Blues Fest cannot be boxed in by just one genre! Whatever your musical persuasion, an artist you adore is going to be performing one of the days. Soak up the sun with 90’s icons like Sheryl Crow and Limp Bizkit, dance spastically to Quebecois art-rock pioneers Angine De Poitrine, or rock out Boomer style to Canadian icons the Guess Who! The festival has mass appeal for every playlist. Sing along to classic standards, thrash to chunky guitars or just nod your head under the late summer sun to some of the world’s most renowned DJs.
Festival d’Humour de Gatineau – Place de la Cité
July 9–18, 2026
Standup is a craft that demands an almost monastic devotion to connecting with an audience. These performers have put in the work to get to this stage. Hosted under-the-stars in Gatineau, this festival highlights some of the biggest names in Francophone standup as well as up-and-comers fresh to the scene. You never know when you’ll experience electricity when you see live comedy, and witness the “next big thing” before they break big to a global audience.
FMG (Festival de montgolfières de Gatineau) – Parc de la Baie
August 27–30, 2026
The people that love hot air balloons are like bird watchers–passionate, dedicated and wholesome as hell. You don’t get forced into liking hot air balloons–they choose you. The Ottawa Jail Hostel organizes multiple outings to experience these wonders in person. Meanwhile, there’s also a functioning carnival running at the same time, lest you think the fun peaked with giant, awe-inspiring balloons. Watch the Dance of the Hot Air Balloons and drink the (metaphorical) nectar of summer until your thirst is quenched. Besides, who doesn’t like a little awe every once in a while?
Save this list! Book your stay at Ottawa Jail Hostel, and come experience Ottawa (and Gatineau) like a true local: with relentless devotion to the summer party vibes. The hostel staff will always be available to help organize your adventures. Pick up local tips, get inside info, and head out and experience Ottawa at the best time of year–whenever you’re there to party.
