You dream of seeing Percé Rock, falling asleep to the sound of the waves, or eating the best crab roll of your life, but your bank account keeps reminding you that money’s a little tight? If you know where to go and you’re open to traveling a bit differently, Gaspésie is absolutely doable on a budget. Here are 15 ways to explore the peninsula without blowing your whole paycheque.

Where to stay in Gaspésie without emptying your wallet

Prioritize hostels

It’s no secret: a dorm bed is the best budget-friendly accommodation move out there. And honestly, you might be surprised by how affordable some private rooms can be too. Great options include Auberge Festive Sea Shack and Auberge Griffon Aventure.

Go camping

If you’re traveling with camping gear, sleeping in a tent can save you a lot of money. Beyond the classic Sépaq and Parks Canada campgrounds, there are plenty of beautiful waterfront spots all around the peninsula.

A few affordable campgrounds in Gaspésie:

  • Camping des Appalaches
  • Camping de la Pointe Taylor (my personal favourite)
  • Camping Parc et Mer Mont-Louis
  • Espace NAPAGA
  • Camping Annie
  • Camping Auberge Griffon Aventure
  • Camping Auberge festive Sea Shack

Low-cost things to do in Gaspésie

Take advantage of the Canada Strong Pass

From June 19 to September 7, 2026, admission to all Parks Canada national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas is free. Yes, you read that right: free. It’s the perfect excuse to visit Forillon and hike the legendary Les Graves trail without paying an entrance fee.

Stop by Le Grand Rassemblement in Sainte-Flavie

Le Grand Rassemblement is a one-of-a-kind land art installation shaped by the tides, and you can see it for free with a quick stop in Sainte-Flavie, right at the gateway to Gaspésie.

Do a lighthouse road trip

How does a mini road trip to see Gaspésie’s 14 lighthouses sound? Other than gas, it costs nothing if you stick to admiring their architecture and the spectacular views they offer over the St. Lawrence River.

  • Go fishing with your own gear

See Percé Rock

Seeing the region’s most iconic landmark costs absolutely nothing if you skip the paid cruise. Instead, wander along the shoreline in Percé or hike up Mont Sainte-Anne, where you’ll get one of the best views in the whole region.

Make the most of the beaches

With 700 kilometres of coastline, let’s just say you’ll have options. Work on your tan, watch for seals and maybe even whales, brave the freezing water, or sip a little apéro with your feet in the sand.

Eat like royalty without spending your whole paycheque

Use the shared kitchen

My best tip for eating well on a budget in Gaspésie? Buy groceries before you reach the ultra-touristy areas and make the most of your hostel’s shared kitchen for your meals.

Put together a picnic with local products

Skip the big fancy restaurants and build yourself a beach picnic with regional products bought straight from local makers. Seriously, this is one of those simple pleasures you do not want to miss.

Eat at a casse-croûte

Personally, I love casse-croûte food because these spots are often the best places to try local specialties without spending a fortune, and the portions are usually huge. Cantine Barberousse at Sea Shack deserves a spot on your list, both for its local flavours and for the option of splitting a plate with the new travel BFF you met at the hostel.

How to get around for less in Gaspésie

Get around strategically

Let’s be real: with gas prices these days, driving won’t magically become cheap. But carpooling can definitely save you a few dollars. AmigoExpress and Poparide are my go-tos for ridesharing anywhere in Quebec.

Use public transit

Check out the website of the Régie intermunicipale de transport Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine (RÉGÎM) to see public transit services between municipalities.

Cycle around the peninsula

It’s not for everyone, but the cheapest way to get around Gaspésie is definitely by bike. If your legs and your motivation are up for it, you can ride around the entire peninsula on two wheels.

Choose the right time to visit Gaspésie

Travel outside peak season

If you can leave in June or September, prices are usually a little lower and, as a bonus, it’ll feel like you have Gaspésie almost all to yourself.

Bonne route !
